Create an account on passportindia.gov.in, select your resident Regional Passport Office (RPO), and log in.
Select 'Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport' and choose between Normal or Tatkaal scheme and 36 or 60 pages.
Pay the statutory passport fee online via SBI e-Pay (UPI/Cards/Net Banking) and select an appointment slot at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK (POPSK).
Attend the appointment with all original documents. Go through Counter A (document scanning, photo, fingerprints), Counter B (verification officer), and Counter C (granting officer approval).
For Normal fresh applications, the local police station conducts Pre-Police Verification. For Tatkaal, police verification is conducted Post-Issuance.
Once printed at the India Security Press, your physical passport booklet is dispatched via secure India Post Speed Post.
How to renew an expired passport or change address/name in your Indian Passport:
Visit passportindia.gov.in and click 'Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport'.
Choose the reason (Validity Due to Expire / Change in Personal Particulars / Exhaustion of Pages).
Pay the renewal fee (₹1,500) online and choose your PSK appointment date.
Submit your old passport for cancellation stamp and receive the new booklet via Speed Post.
How to download your Passport Application Receipt and Appointment Slip:
Log into your registered user account.
Select your active passport application ARN.
Download the PDF containing your appointment schedule, batch number, and barcode.
Track your passport application, police verification, and Speed Post tracking status:
Go to passportindia.gov.in and click 'Track Application Status'.
Select 'Passport/PCC/IC/GEP' and enter your 15-character File Number (e.g., DEL076543212345) and DOB.
Check if your application is under police review, passport printed, or track the India Post consignment number.
NO. In India, a passport is a physical, physical security travel document booklet containing biometric data and security watermarks. You CANNOT download a soft copy PDF passport for travel. However, you can download your Application Receipt, Appointment Slip, and Fee Payment Challan from passportindia.gov.in.
1) Non-ECR (Emigration Check Not Required): For citizens who have completed matriculation (Class 10) or higher, persons above 50 years of age, or income tax payers. They can travel abroad for work without needing POE (Protector of Emigrants) clearance. 2) ECR (Emigration Check Required): For applicants with education below Class 10 travelling to 18 notified Gulf/middle-eastern countries for employment.
Under the Tatkaal scheme, passports are processed on high priority with 'Post-Police Verification' and are typically dispatched within 1 to 3 working days after the PSK appointment. It requires an additional ₹2,000 fee and verification of 3 mandatory identity proofs.
You can apply for the Re-issue (renewal) of your Indian passport up to 1 year before its expiry date. Most foreign countries require passports to have at least 6 months of remaining validity for visa issuance.
