Anyone who wants to legally drive a motor vehicle in India
Visit Parivahan portal or RTO office and apply for a learner's license.
Take and pass the written test on traffic rules and road signs.
Practice driving for at least 30 days with your learner's license.
After 30 days, apply for a permanent driving license online or at RTO.
Attend the practical driving test at the RTO.
Once you pass, your permanent driving license will be issued and delivered.
You can renew your driving licence, update your address, or add a new vehicle class online through the Parivahan Sewa portal without visiting the RTO in most states.
Go to parivahan.gov.in and click on "Driving Licence Related Services".
Choose the state where your licence was originally issued.
Choose "Renewal of Driving Licence", "Change of Address", or "Add Vehicle Class" as required.
Enter your DL number and personal details. Upload required documents.
Pay the applicable fees (₹200–₹400 depending on the service).
For adding new vehicle classes, book a driving test at your RTO.
Once approved, download the digital RC or receive the physical card by post.
You can download a digital copy of your Driving Licence (mParivahan app or Digilocker) which is legally accepted across Indian states as per the Motor Vehicles Act.
Download the mParivahan app from Google Play or Apple App Store.
Sign up using your mobile number and OTP.
Enter your DL number and date of birth to add your DL to the app.
Your digital DL is now available in the app, valid across India for traffic police checks.
You can check the status of your driving licence application, renewal, or test result online using the Parivahan portal.
Go to parivahan.gov.in and navigate to "Application Status".
Enter your application number and date of birth.
See whether your application is approved, pending, or if a driving test is scheduled.
Yes, a driving license issued in one state is valid across all of India.
Apply online through Parivahan portal or visit your RTO before expiry. Renewal can be done up to 5 years before expiry.
20 years from the date of issue or until age 50, whichever is earlier. After 50, it's valid for 5 years at a time.
You can download a digital copy of your Driving Licence using the DigiLocker app or the mParivahan mobile app. Both are officially recognized under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Visit the Parivahan Sewa portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in), select your state, and choose 'Apply for Driving Licence'. You will need an active Learner's Licence before applying for a permanent DL.
