An NPR Slip (National Population Register Slip) is an acknowledgment receipt given to households after they register with the National Population Register of India. It contains the NPR household serial number and confirms that your household's data has been recorded. NPR data is collected door-to-door by government enumerators, and the slip is proof of registration.
Currently, there is no direct government portal where individuals can look up their NPR number online. The NPR number is assigned during the door-to-door enumeration process. If you participated in the NPR survey, your NPR number would have been given on the acknowledgment slip at the time of registration. For queries, contact your local District Registrar's office or the Office of the Registrar General of India (RGI).
NPR (National Population Register): A register of 'usual residents' of India compiled by the Registrar General of India (RGI). Includes citizens AND non-citizen residents. Data is collected through a questionnaire of 15 fields. Aadhaar (UIDAI): A unique biometric identity number. Only for 'residents' (those residing for 182+ days), not necessarily citizens. Contains biometrics (fingerprints, iris). The key difference: Aadhaar is for identity; NPR is a population database for demographic data and planning.
NPR (National Population Register): Includes ALL usual residents of India — citizens and non-citizens alike. It is a demographic exercise for population planning and policy. NRC (National Register of Citizens): A register of Indian CITIZENS only. Currently exists only in Assam after the Supreme Court-mandated updation exercise. A proposed all-India NRC would use NPR data as a base, which is why NPR has been politically sensitive.
An NPR Smart Card was proposed to be issued based on NPR data, similar to Aadhaar, but the project has been delayed since 2020 due to policy and political issues. As of 2024, NPR Smart Cards have NOT been issued at a national scale. The most recent phase of NPR door-to-door data collection (planned for 2020) was postponed due to COVID-19 and has not yet been rescheduled.
When applying for or updating a PAN card, there is an optional field asking if you have an NPR number (National Population Register). This field is for demographic data linkage between UIDAI, RGI, and CBDT databases. It is completely optional — you can leave it blank without any impact on your PAN card application.
For NPR registration, no documents need to be submitted — it is a self-declaration process. The enumerator visits your house and fills in your details (name, DOB, address, occupation, etc.) based on information you provide verbally. You do not need to show any ID documents for the NPR survey, though providing accurate information is important.
Participation in the NPR survey is mandatory under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. However, the NPR enumeration exercise has not been completed pan-India due to political controversy and COVID-19 related postponements. There are no immediate penalties being enforced currently.
As of 2024-2025, the NPR updation exercise that was planned alongside the Census 2021 remains on hold. The Census 2021 itself has been postponed to 2025-2026. Since NPR data collection is typically conducted alongside the Census, the NPR exercise is also delayed. The government has not announced a new date for the Census or NPR data collection as of early 2025.
If you participated in the NPR enumeration when enumerators visited your house, you should have received an acknowledgment slip at that time. If you need a copy of this, contact your local Ward Office, Block Development Office, or the District Registrar's office. There is currently no online portal to retrieve or re-download NPR acknowledgment receipts.
NPR acknowledgment slips are not widely accepted as official address proof at banks, government departments, or UIDAI. For address proof, use Aadhaar, Voter ID, utility bills, or a bank passbook. The NPR slip is primarily an internal government record.
