Challan 280 (or ITNS 280) is the primary form used by individuals and companies to pay their Income Tax online. It is used to pay Advance Tax, Self-Assessment Tax, or taxes demanded through regular assessment.
When filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), you must enter the details of the taxes paid in the 'Taxes Paid and Verification' schedule. You will need the BSR Code (7 digits), Date of Deposit, Challan Serial Number (5 digits), and the exact amount paid from your Challan 280 receipt.
If you made a mistake like wrong AY or wrong minor head (Type of Payment), you can submit a Challan Correction Request. This can be done online on the TRACES portal or the Income Tax e-Filing portal, or by visiting your bank/Jurisdictional Assessing Officer, depending on the error type.
